In the scintillating world of diamonds, we use the 4Cs to classify the characteristics of a diamond and determine their value – the 4Cs stand for Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat weight. It is the synergy of these 4Cs that transforms a rough diamond into a dazzling polished one. Let us understand more about the 4Cs to help you choose the right diamond for you!
Cut:
The cut of a diamond should be thought of as the diamond’s personality; the right cut gives the diamond an excellent play of light (reflecting, refracting and dispersing light) as each facet is in perfect symmetry. Put simply, the better the cut of a diamond, the more the diamond shines, increasing its brilliance.
Color:
Diamonds occur in many distinctive shades, from truly colourless (D-F colors) which is rare and valuable to near colourless (G-I colors) to warmer whites and darker hues of yellow (J-Z colors). The color is graded under controlled lighting by a trained eye as the differences in shades are subtly graduating.

Clarity:
Clarity refers to the purity of a diamond and is graded by examining the presence of internal and external inclusions. These imperfections influence the quality and that’s why diamonds with fewer of such inclusions will have a higher clarity. The clarity grade ranges from flawless, internally and externally (FL), to slightly included (SI).
Carat
Carat weight is about the size of a diamond. In general, the larger a diamond, the more rare and valuable it is. However, other diamonds of less carat weight may have characteristics, which could derive higher value. Note that a one carat diamond is equal to 0.20 grams.
The balance of the 4Cs contribute to the value, brilliance and rarity of a diamond. So the next time you glance upon one, be sure to look beyond its mesmerising sparkle!
